Bringing your furry best friend to Thailand doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right preparation, your dog can arrive safely, stress-free, and ready to enjoy their new life with you in Bangkok or beyond. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to help you through the process.
1. Check Thailand’s Pet Import Requirements
Thailand requires all incoming dogs to meet certain health and documentation standards.
• Age: Dogs must be at least 4 months old.
• Microchip: ISO-compliant microchip is mandatory.
• Vaccinations: Rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel but less than 1 year old) and core vaccines (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza).
• Health certificate: Issued by your veterinarian within 7 days of travel.
2. Apply for an Import Permit
You must request a permit from Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) at least 7 days before arrival.
• The application can usually be submitted online or via email.
• The permit is valid for 60 days from the date of issue.
3. Prepare for Travel
• Airlines: Book with a pet-friendly airline that offers in-cabin or cargo pet services.
• Crate: Use an IATA-approved travel crate that is the right size for your dog.
• Comfort: Add familiar bedding or a toy to help reduce stress.
4. Arrival in Thailand
Upon landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) or another approved entry point:
• Pets and documents are inspected by quarantine officers.
• If all requirements are met, your dog will be released into your care.
• In rare cases, a short quarantine (up to 30 days) may be required if documents or vaccines are incomplete.
5. Settling Your Dog in Thailand
• Schedule a check-up with a local vet.
• Keep proof of vaccines and import permit handy, as they may be required for boarding, daycare, or dog parks.
• Ease your pup into their new environment gradually.
